I grew up on a farm but we lived only fourteen miles from a major city that has a university, four colleges and many industries. When I finished high school I moved into the city to attend the university. There are several shopping centers and big department stores as well as several immense super markets. I lived there while I earned my four year degree and then while I was working for four years prior to getting married. My husband and I lived three miles out of the city limits for the first year we were married.

Five years ago we decided that we would purchase a home of a lake. My friends and sisters could not believe that I was agreeing to move to such a rural area. I still worked in an area that had shopping centers so I would do my shopping during my lunch hour and after work. This meant we were three miles from a very small town and forty five minutes away from any city big enough to have a mall. At first I did not change any of my shopping habits. I love to go shopping; it is one of my favorite pass times. After four years I quit my job because I could no longer deal with the stress of commuting one hundred and twenty miles a day.

After I quit my job I started a home based business. I have had to adjust the way I shop. I cannot just turn around and go back if I forget to pick up something. My commute is now walking from one room in my home to another. I need to make sure that I have a lengthy list when I go into the nearest city. I love being able to set my own time tables and to work on the goals that I feel are important. This is a change for me. I used to go grocery shopping several times each week, now I go in and do major shopping every other week. When I go to the shopping centers I write down which stores I need to go into so that I will total everything that I need to.

For the first forty two years of my life I was within a fifteen minute drive of major shopping centers.

A few weeks ago my sister and I went shopping just to spend time together. My sister commented on how organized I was with my list of stores and items to purchase. We went to two shopping centers that are located close to her home. I told her that I cannot afford the time to forget something because of my commutes. I find that I save a great deal of money by writing my detailed list because I do not have time to look at things that are not on the list.
